Group of business leaders brainstorms to address downturn

Published January 27, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

A group of business leaders commissioned by Mayor John Hickenlooper and Gov. Bill Ritter to brainstorm solutions to the economic downturn will reconvene today.

Since December, members have been meeting in industry- specific groups: banking, legal, energy, retail, real estate, hospitality, cultural, and architecture-construction.

Each group will present its ideas to the full membership at today's closed meeting. The goal is to narrow the list and focus on the best ideas, said Kelly Brough, a Hickenlooper staffer who is coordinating the group's activities.

The banking group, led by Vectra Bank CEO Bruce Alexander, will suggest extending certain commercial real estate loans to help prevent a downturn in property values. It would not be a loan fund; rather, each participating bank would make the loans based on its own standards and keep them on its own balance sheet.
