Champion steer just a gorgeous fella
Prize money to pay for teen's education

Bodybuilders have nothing on Chavez, a big beefy fella.
And you thought the most gorgeous Miss America struggled to get her hair to perfection. Chavez's coiffure glistened under the lights of the Beef Palace Auction Arena on Friday.
All in all, Chavez's stout physique, muscular calves and thighs, long neck and slick, black coat of hair were the envy of the 64 other steers that competed this week for Grand Champion Steer.
Not only did Chavez notch first place in the Junior Livestock Champions, but his exhibitor, Ky Stierwalt, of Leedey, Okla., secured $50,000, the top bid on the auction block.
Chavez gets nothing of the prize money. He is headed to the slaughterhouse, but Stierwalt, 18, probably will owe his future to the 1,295-pound buddy that he helped groom and train since Chavez was 7 months old. The steer now is 11/2 years old.
Stierwalt plans to use $45,000 of the winnings to go to college, where he wants to pursue a degree in agricultural business. The remaining $5,000 stays with the stock show.
"It's the prettiest one I've ever seen," said Karen Krause, co-owner of Emil-Lene's Sirloin House, who bid the highest for Chavez.
"The thing about buying these (champion steers) is that you look at it as if you don't want to eat them," her husband, Steve, added. "One thousand and 200 pounds is nothing to sneeze about."
