WINTER: A White House love story
Published January 23, 2009 at 3 p.m.
Is there anything left to say about the historic inauguration of Barack Obama?
Maybe one thing.
How often do you see such chemistry between two people as you saw between Barack and Michelle Obama on Tuesday?
We're talking true romance, people.
We're talking middle-age-marrieds-with-kids who can still look pretty smitten. That, or they're uncanny actors.
Their affection jumps off the page in that already-iconic photo of them walking arm-in-arm in the inaugural parade. The Rocky ran it Wednesday across pages 2 and 3. The image made the front pages of several East Coast papers.
Michelle is leaning into Barack's left shoulder, he's turning toward her, and their smiles say it all: They ran the marathon, all 26 miles of it uphill, and they didn't only finish. They finished first, and they did it together.
Swap the inaugural clothes for bridal wear and it could be their wedding photo - only they seem to be having too good a time for that scenario.
Later in the day, they faced another marathon - 10 inaugural balls - but once again you're struck by how impossibly good they look on camera, and how impossibly relaxed, after a punishing campaign.
My friend Judy Latuda, with whom I often swap commentary on events of the day, off-handedly remarked that not only are the Obamas telegenic, they clearly like each other.
Judy loved Beyonce's performance of At Last for the first couple's first dance, declaring a more perfect choice of song was not possible.
Late Tuesday night, as I checked out dozens of inaugural gala pictures streaming into the Rocky's photo database, I was embarrassed to find myself positively moony. Teary-eyed, in fact.
Some of Obama's speeches have been described as soaring.
Well, images of Michelle and Barack, he in his tux, she in her understated white gown, were also so.
In one photo, she's shooting him a shy look. In another, he seems to be teasing her, and she's clearly tickled.
The first dance is on YouTube, in case you missed it on TV. Sweet and utterly romantic. As a couple, the Obamas rank with the legends: Tracy and Hepburn, Jolie and Pitt, Smith and Pinkett, Guinevere and Lancelot.
And so to all the ways Barack Obama has inspired people, add another.
A Cinderella story that Disney had nothing to do with. The First Dude, giving us a real-world model of love and commitment that's as powerful as his words, or more so.
