JAZZ NOTES: Guitarist in town for show, class

Published January 22, 2009 at 7 p.m.

Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg brings his strong New York quartet to Dazzle, 930 Lincoln St., for shows at 7 and 9 this evening and Saturday.

Kreisberg has worked with a variety of players, including vibraphonist Joe Locke, drummers Lenny White and Ari Hoenig and Hammond B-3 man Dr. Lonnie Smith. He has also recorded six CDs under his own name, displaying a swinging if not quite straight-ahead style that gets your attention without bombast.

In addition to Kreisberg, the band has Wil Vinson on saxophone, Joe Martin on bass and Mark Ferber on drums ($15/$12 students at the 9 p.m. shows, 303-839-5100). Ferber and Vinson are on Kreisberg's latest quintet CD on Mel Bay, The South of Everywhere.

While he's in town, Kreisberg is holding a workshop on the art of improvisation at the Broadway School of Music, 1940 S. Broadway. The workshop runs from 1-3 p.m. Saturday ($20/$25 at the door, 303-777-0833).

ALSO ON TAP: On Sunday, Dazzle hosts the 9th + Lincoln Orchestra's monthly visit to the club at 7 p.m. ($10/$7 students).

The adventurous aggregation, directed by Tyler Gilmore, isn't your ordinary big band, as the orchestra's well-received first CD clearly illustrates. And on Sunday, the 17-piece band celebrates its third anniversary.

As for Gilmore, the 9th + Lincoln director heads to Chicago next month to premiere a composition at Columbia College with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, commissioned by ASCAP to honor pianist Hank Jones.

Each year, ASCAP awards a commission to an established writer and to a young, emerging composer. In 2008, Gilmore, who originally hailed from Wyoming, was named that emerging composer. That's one more reason to catch him with 9th + Lincoln.

* At 7 p.m. Monday, Dazzle offers a CD release party featuring bassist Rich Lamb ($10). The new disc, Music Along the Way, features a quartet that has brother Chuck Lamb on piano, Ron Miles on cornet and Chris Lee on drums. Pianist Lamb, by the way, also plays keyboards in the Brubeck Brothers band co-led by Dave Brubeck's sons, Chris and Dan.

LOOKING AHEAD: Speaking of Dazzle, the club on Lincoln will host JazzFest Denver March 20-22. Headliners for this year's fest include pianist Eliane Elias, singer Kurt Elling, trumpeter Terell Stafford and Hammond B-3 player Pat Bianchi, who performs with drummer Jim White's Be3 Trio. You can get tickets online at jazzfestdenver.com. Advance tickets are $45 for each evening or $125 for all three nights. Student tickets are available at $25, or $65 for all three nights.

* The UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival April 23-25 has a serious lineup with singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, tenor saxophonist Chris Potter's Underground band and the Mingus Big Band (800-315-2737).

* And the Telluride Jazz Celebration that now occurs in early June has announced that guitarist Bill Frisell is the festival's guest of honor for 2009.

Frisell will have a trio with Rudy Royston on drums and Eyvind Kang on violin and tuba.

Saxophonist Donald Harrison, singer Lizz Wright, trumpeter Christian Scott, guitarist Jimmy Herring and the Rebirth Brass Band are among the other groups on the bill for the festival, which runs June 5-7.
