Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony goes to basket while being defended by Suns forward Amare Stoudemire.
If Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony is chosen an All-Star starter Thursday, it could be considered somewhat of an upset.
Not only has Anthony missed 12 games because of injuries and a suspension, but his primary challenger - Phoenix forward Amare Stoudemire - launched an Internet campaign (Vote4Amare.com) for the final three-plus weeks of balloting.
San Antonio's Tim Duncan is a lock to finish first among Western Conference forwards, and Anthony led Stoudemire by about 10,400 votes in the most recent returns Jan. 12.
The top two forwards will be selected as starters for the All-Star Game in Phoenix on Feb. 15.
Though fans' balloting ended Monday, Anthony said he had not heard whether he held off Stoudemire for a starting spot.
If Stoudemire gets the nod, Anthony could be selected as a reserve by Western Conference coaches. He is averaging 21.1 points and 7.3 rebounds this season but has missed the past seven games because of a broken right hand.
Anthony hopes to return to the lineup Jan. 30 - one day after the reserves are announced. He also hopes the hand injury doesn't discourage coaches when they make their picks.
"I'll be back before All-Star (weekend)," he said. "I don't think that should be a factor."
