Rock Canyon makes 4A splash
Published February 13, 2009 at 11:40 p.m.
One could forgive Rock Canyon's Taylor Curado for her eighth-place finish Friday in the Class 4A preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle.
After all, she just had established a 4A state record in the 100 butterfly, the previous event, and she was a bit tired.
Her teammate, Kirsten Milberg, who is seeking to win her fourth title in the 100 backstroke, wasn't tired at all, though, as she set the meet record in her specialty with a time of 56.54 seconds. That erased the record of 57.40, set by Niwot's Kristen Lehay in 2003, and earned All-America honors.
It was that kind of day for Rock Canyon all around. In addition to top efforts from Curado and Milberg, the Jaguars qualified swimmers in the 11 events that were contested in the Mountain View High School pool. The finals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today, after the diving preliminaries at 10:30 a.m.
"I'm so excited, as it really was a good swim," said Milberg, who also swam legs on Rock Canyon's top qualifying 200-medley and 400-freestyle- relay teams. "My goal is to get my fourth state title in the backstroke, so I'm excited about the possibility.
"Our team is really swimming amazing, and we've had our best times in just about every event," Milberg said. "I think we've got our girls right where we want them. I would be awesome to win state."
Curado, after her third title in the butterfly, zipped to a top qualifying time of 55.82, bettering the former mark of 56.92 set by Amberle Biedermann of Rampart in 2000. That time also earned her automatic All- America status.
"It is very motivational to want to do well and help the team," Curado said. "My goal (Friday) was to try and break the 4A record, and I did what I did. I'm happy with it, and I know I can go faster, because I was choking on my third leg.
"I only had about five minutes to warm down and get ready for my next race," Curado said. "It went well. I was tired but did the best I could."
Rock Canyon also had the top qualifier in the 100 breaststroke, as Kara Schweitzer swam a time of 1:07.01.
