Elevations Credit Union cancels cards after security breach

Published February 13, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

Elevations Credit Union canceled 35,000 of its members' credit and check cards this week in the wake of a security breach at card-processing company Heartland Payment Systems.

The credit union, formerly known as University of Colorado Credit Union, said on Feb. 2 that it would issue new cards to members affected by the breach and would block old card numbers.

On Wednesday, members' cards affected by the breach stopped working.

"The Heartland Payment Systems security breach is leading to an increased trend of credit and check card misuse," the credit union told members on its Web site Thursday.

"As a result, Elevations Credit Union has taken the proactive step of blocking the compromised cards to help protect our members against any potential unauthorized charges leading to an increase trend of credit and check card misuse."

Heartland disclosed the breach, which occurred in 2008, last month. It has set up a Web site, 2008breach.com, with information for consumers.
