Size winning policy for Aurora Central

Playing in a boys basketball game sponsored by an insurance company Friday, Fort Lupton paid a high premium for its lack of height.

Aurora Central used 15 offensive rebounds and five blocked shots to overpower the Blue- devils 83-51 in a Skyline League contest.

In spite of the lopsided score, Fort Lupton led Aurora Central (12-7 overall, 4-0 league) by two after the first quarter. The Bluedevils (9-11, 3-2) showed plenty of discipline, employing their zone and using numerous passes to open things for clear shots.

"They played hard and we came out kind of slow, with no energy," Central senior Kilen Venable said. "We didn't have school (Friday), and everyone seemed kind of lackadaisical until coach (Ian Calvert) started getting on us."

Fort Lupton's principal shooter was senior guard Armando Salgado, who sank two three-pointers in the first quarter and led his team with 15 points.

Salgado's performance was welcome, as the Bluedevils are now without leading scorer Tyler Williamson. Williamson was averaging close to 15 points a game through 17 games, but coach John Panas would only say that Williamson wasn't playing any more.

On the other side, the Trojans have been bolstered by the presence of 6-foot-5 Isaac Stubblefield, who is back from an anterior cruciate injury suffered about four months ago, and the development of Dese Lee.

Central scored a combined 49 points in the middle two quarters to take a commanding lead. Venable led the attack with 11 points in each quarter before finishing with 27.

Venable, called "streaky" by Calvert, started things in the second quarter with a three- pointer, one of his three in the quarter.

Lee scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots, not bad for a player virtually unknown heading into this season.

"He's the most improved player in Colorado, I think," Ven able said.
