Green Mountain's Brian Hunt scores against Chatfield's Taylor Longo, left, and Brandon Durbin on Wednesday in Lakewood.

Brian Hunt accomplished too much Wednesday night to be blamed for Green Mountain's fourth-quarter problems. Still, the senior guard could have ended things a lot sooner against Chatfield.

Hunt saved his best for last, which in this case turned out to be overtime. He scored seven points in those four minutes, making a key three-pointer and delivering a quality assist to Anthony Nicholson as the Rams beat the Chargers 67-63.

The victory pushed Green Mountain's to 13-0 overall, 4-0 in the Jefferson County League. Hunt, a 6-foot-1 senior, finished with 27 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and one blocked shot.

Chatfield, which has recorded a few wins against tough teams, dropped to 9-4, 2-2.

Hunt was on target in the first quarter, making three of his five three-pointers, plus another basket.

"I started the game with a lot of confidence," he said.

Hunt also praised his teammates for their production.

"Tyler Swaim (who hit two big three-pointers in the second quarter) was unconscious in this game," Hunt said. "Cody (Swartzendruber) played like a hoss."

Hunt's play kept the Rams in the game, while Chatfield used excellent passing throughout its lineup to score inside baskets.

Trevor Wages, a 6-8 junior, rolled in three layups in the first quarter, the first set up on a pass from Tyler Haidaris.

Green Mountain then started to apply more pressure on Chatfield's entry passes, which allowed its frontcourt players to pick off a couple of lob passes that had been turning into Chargers' baskets earlier.

Surprisingly, Chatfield was less successful down on the block with Green Mountain's 6-8 senior Nick Sleeman sitting out the second half because of a rolled left ankle.

Wages said the Rams just played harder despite losing their biggest presence in the middle. He also praised Green Mountain's defense.

"They got out on our guards," Wages said. "It was hard to get it to the big man."

Landon Vermeer, Chatfield's top scorer, opened up from the outside after Hunt held him to a solo basket in the first half.

Vermeer finished with 13 points, only one below his average, but Hunt did struggle in the fourth quarter. Hunt took three fourth-quarter shots and made only one. He also missed three of five throws, critical ones that could have decided the game.

That minislump ended immediately as Hunt took over in overtime.

He drained a 15-foot jumper, fed Nicholson for that layup and drained a three-pointer. All that came in short order after Taylor Rogers hit a free throw to put the Chargers ahead 54-52.

Rams coach Rudy Martin said Hunt shot too quickly down the stretch in regulation, but he had also worried before the game that his star doesn't shoot enough. Hunt found the right balance Wednesday in overtime to keep the Rams undefeated.
