Denver Film Society names new executive director

He served the last 21 years as the head of Film/Video and Concerts for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where he was responsible for the programming, promoting, presenting, and funding of 750 film programs and 50 concerts annually

The Denver Film Society (DFS) has hired a new executive director after a six-month national search.

Burleigh “Bo” Smith, 59, will succeed Ron Henderson, a festival co-founder who stepped down last November 2007 after 30 years with the film society.

Smith has directed the film, video and concert program at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts for 21 years. He was responsible for programming and funding 750 film programs and 50 concerts yearly. Working with various community groups, Smith created Jewish, Iranian, Gay/Lesbian, and African film festivals.

Smith, whose resume includes 10 years as a teacher at Boston College and the Rhode Island School of Design, will officially start work at the DFS on Oct. 14.
