Kent Denver's Melissa Julia, right, and Mountain Vista's Sam Kroll go shoulder to shoulder in the Sun Devils' 4-1 victory.

Lucy Dikeou is only a freshman, but she has already learned the fine art of praising her teammates.

Dikeou scored two goals and assisted on another as the Kent Denver Sun Devils barnstormed Mountain Vista 4-1 in the state field hockey semifinals at All City Stadium on Wednesday night.

"My team does most of the work. I just try to help out as much as I can," Dikeou said.

She wasn't giving herself enough credit. Dikeou weaved through Mountain Vista's defense and around goalkeeper Kassidy Willie before tapping in an easy goal four minutes into the game.

Again, Dikeou said it was one of her teammates that deserved the recognition.

"My goalie helped me come up with a move, so I have to thank Lizzy (Clark) for that," Dikeou said.

Kent Denver (14-2-1), the winner of seven state titles in 12 years, will play St. Mary's Academy in the championship game at 7 p.m. Monday.

Mountain Vista (11-5-1) advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive season, and it appeared to have some momentum after falling behind 1-0.

"We had several instances where we had some offensive pressure and offensive control," Golden Eagles coach Brian Nutter said. "There were times when we controlled the ball. It was just a matter of us not getting the ball in the goal."

Nutter, who is married to Kent Denver coach Kathy James, claimed he wouldn't ask his wife to sleep on the couch.

"No, we support field hockey no matter who is playing," he said.

The Sun Devils took control midway through the first half after Jesse Burk redirected Dikeou's shot into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Krista D'Alessandro extended the lead in the 22nd minute with a goal set up by a penalty corner. Alexx Hoholik controlled the ball at the top of the 16-yard circle and dished to D'Alessandro for the score.

"That was a new play that we just made up (Tuesday). It worked out really well, just like we practiced it," D'Alessandro said.

In the second half, Dikeou again worked through the defense before slipping a shot past Willie for a 4-0 advantage.

Mountain Vista didn't back down, and senior Emily Bayless beat Mandy Raeder, who stepped into goal for Kent Denver in the second half, to cut into the lead.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to move closer on a penalty stroke with 6:21 remaining, but Britney Ryan's try went wide left of the net.

"The touches went their way, and that happens some nights," Nutter said.
