Cheyenne Mountain again made a statement on the opening day of the Class 4A boys state tennis tournament.
The Indians, who have won 13 of the past 16 state titles outright, went undefeated through the first round and quarterfinals Thursday at the City Park Tennis Complex.
"That's as much as you could ask for," said veteran Cheyenne Mountain coach Dave Adams, whose team has won three state titles in a row. "We had a number of guys step up and have clutch performances. Now, we just have to be ready to play our matches (today)."
John Adams (No. 1 singles), Jonathon Moore (No. 2 singles), Michael Cutter (No. 3 singles), Kevin Lynch/Matt Bowser (No. 1 doubles), Ari Halling/Parker Curry (No. 2 doubles), Matt Shoemaker/Jay Hendren (No. 3 doubles) and Spencer Heintz/Chris Stuller (No. 4 doubles) moved into their respective semifinals, which begin at 9 a.m. today.
"I would love to win individual championships, but winning the team championship is a whole different level," said John Adams, the coach's son. "(Today) is huge for us, and we just all need to come out and be focused."
Cheyenne Mountain is atop the team chase with 14 points, followed by Kent Denver and Mullen, tied for second with 12 points each.
Kent Denver has players competing in six semifinal brackets, Mullen five.
"We knew Jack Reynolds (Kent Denver's No. 1 singles player) had a tough draw, and it's unfortunate that we will not get any points from him," Kent Denver coach Randy Ross said. "We won state in 2003 without a No. 1 singles player, and we just need to make sure that we don't overlook anybody in our matches (today)."
The Sun Devils tied Cheyenne Mountain for the state crown in 1999 and won state outright in 2003 and 2004.
In the No. 1 singles bracket, tournament favorite Jelmer Vriesma of Wheat Ridge remained unbeaten by beating J.D. Dance of Lewis-Palmer 6-1, 6-3 and Greeley West's Chris Schommer 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in consecutive matches.
"The first set was pretty easy (against Schommer)," said the 17-year-old Vriesma, who is an exchange student from Sittard, Netherlands. "The second set, he really started to serve and volley well and he surprised me about how he came back."
Vriesma will tangle with Adams in the semifinals. Adams beat Jamey Swiggart of Steamboat Springs 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to advance.
The biggest surprise in the No. 1 singles bracket was delivered by Joseph Aragon. The junior from Fossil Ridge upset Mullen's Stan Vaughan 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Vaughan finished second at No. 2 singles last year.
"(Aragon) was on fire," said Vaughan, a junior. "He was going for a lot of shots and pushing shots to my backhand and running me all over the court. He definitely deserved to win."
Aragon collides with Broomfield's Kelly Donaldson in the semifinals. Donaldson upended Pueblo County's Miles Lucero 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Lucero slipped past Reynolds 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 in the first round.
