Green Mountain dominates Broomfield Invitational

BROOMFIELD There is nothing like a one-two-three finish in the individual all-around competition to put an exclamation point on a team championship. And that's just what Green Mountain accomplished Saturday in winning the 27th Annual Broomfield Invitational at Mountain Range High School.
Green Mountain, behind MacKenzie Comstock's all-around title, followed by teammates Kelly Stone and Taelore Fehr, scored 178.85 points to top Overland (174.65) and Mountain Range (173.425). It was the fourth title for the Rams under coach Sandi Patterson at Broomfield in the last five years and the teams fifth overall. They also won the title in 1992.
Comstock scored 36.725 to nip Stone, who tallied 36.45 and Fehr, who scored 35.95. But on the team’s last individual event of the day, the balance beam, it appeared that Stone, a three-year Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado selection, would come away with the title.
However, Stone fell off the beam and was given an 8.6. Up next on the beam, Comstock scored a 9.575, to secure the title. But Comstock also had her fall for the day on floor, where she was given a 9.0 (10th place) while Stone came through with a 9.25 effort, good enough for first place.
"It's always a struggle when you fall on floor, but beam is one of my stronger events and I was able to pull it out," Comstock said. "I've been practicing hard so this was a good outcome. This is a good meet to show how good we are as a team and this is the kind of meet that gives us a lot of confidence. It would have been nice to have a better meet and score a 180 or a 181, but we will take this."
It also was a good comeback for Stone, who missed four meets this season because of a sprained ankle.
"It was kind of a funny fall, but I'm glad that if anyone else was going to win, it would be MacKenzie," said Stone, who also won the uneven bars with a 9.5. "But it also was a day of falls. Doing as well with my fall, we counted basically four falls on vault and I took about four or five steps on my landing."
Fehr also completed a one-two-three sweep for Green Mountain as she was third on the beam with a 9.375. And, the all-around podium also looked like a Green Mountain day as Kaitlyn Bodkin was sixth with a 35.1. Helping to break up the Rams afternoon was Loveland's Emily Kolacny, who was fourth (35.65) in the all-around, and Standley Lake's Alicia Asmus, fifth (35.425).
Having Stone back in the lineup is a huge relief for Patterson as Saturday's team effort resulted in the highest score for the Rams this season.
"I'm very pleased with the girls and Kelly was able to step it up today coming off her injury," Patterson said. "But not only her, the whole team was able to step it up. We've had some lax practices, so I'm pleased. We have room for improvement, but this is high school and nothing is ever perfect.
"I'm not positive, but I think this is the first time MacKenzie has been able to beat Kelly in the all-around. She is the most awesome kid, not only as a gymnast but she has a great personally and is always trying to push us to be better, too. She is amazing."
Ruby Robinson and Lauren Hanley were the top performers for Overland and coach Alan Herron. Robinson, with a 9.225, and Hanley, scoring a 9.2, placed two-three on vault. Hanley was also fourth on floor (9.1). However, the Trailblazers might have had a higher score, and perhaps won the meet if Megan Adams would have been available. She had other commitments Saturday and was unable to participate in the meet.
"I thought the kids did a good job and it was nice to get some other girls a chance to perform," Herron said. "It was good for us to get a good look at what girls we will have down the stretch and give the girls a chance to battle for their spots. We had a beam that was not typical for us as we counted too many falls on beam. Two falls on bars also hurt us today."
Mountain Range, which won the Class 4A championship last season but is up to 5A this year, was led by Janelle Pacheco, who finished fourth on the bars (9.275) and fifth on floor (9.05) and Jamie Fiske, who was sixth on floor (9.025).
It was also good to see Loveland's Hannah Bower, who has won the past three 5A all-around titles at state, get back into competition. She only competed in two events Saturday, placing second on the beam (9.475) and fifth on the bars (9.25).
"I had hoped to do three events today, but it didn't work out," Bower said. "But I hope I'll be ready for league and regionals to do all-around."
Bear Creek's Hailey Giueland was also able to put a damper on Green Mountain's day as she won the vault with a 9.3.
