All-Colorado field hockey: Hackstaff shows versatility
Published November 19, 2008 at 8:04 p.m.
* Natalie Hackstaff can and will play any position on the field.
"I'll play wherever the coach tells me to play," she said.
That type of selflessness helped Hackstaff guide St. Mary's Academy through uncharted territory on the way to the school's first field hockey state championship.
Hackstaff, whose twin sister Ellen is equally talented, moved seamlessly from defense to attack, but her senior leadership proved just as vital.
The Rocky's All-Colorado player of the year admitted she wasn't certain how the season would play out. But the mind-set changed after a 1-0 overtime victory against Colorado Academy early in the playoffs.
"That was a huge game for us. We really started to believe after that," she said. "We were so excited, and we just knew we could beat anybody."
The Wildcats were forced into overtime in each of their three postseason games, including the 2-1 title game against perennial power Kent Denver.
Hackstaff, who doubles up in the spring by playing lacrosse and running track, is weighing her options for college, but her sport of choice is clear.
"Field hockey is definitely my sport," she said.
Marcene Murphy of St. Mary's Academy earned the honor of coach of the year for leading her team to a 13-4-1 record and a piece of school history.
