Middle school mourns death after car crash
Published November 5, 2008 at 12:05 a.m.
Mental health counselors visited Cherry Creek West Middle School in Greenwood Village on Tuesday to talk with students after the death of 13-year-old eighth-grader Dallas Burton.
Dallas was injured Oct. 31 when the Mazda he was riding in was struck by a Ford Bronco driven by Donald K. Edwards, 46, of Aurora. The Aurora youth was hospitalized with serious head injuries, then air lifted to Children's Hospital. He died of complications on Monday.
"Dallas was a vibrant young man, a good student who loved music and was a true leader among the students," said Sheila Graham, principal at Cherry Creek West Middle School.
"Students said that he would drop anything to be there for a friend. It's a tragic loss."
Edwards, who was not injured, could face vehicular homicide charges. Police arrested him at the scene after he failed roadside sobriety tests.
Dallas was on his way with three friends to a friend's home after attending a service Friday evening at Colorado Christian Fellowship Church when the accident occurred at East Iliff Avenue and South Peoria Street.
A statement Tuesday from the church noted that Dallas was involved in Youth F.E.R.V.O.R., the youth ministry at the church.
Services for Dallas Burton have not been finalized.
