Sisson nearly sweeps 4A individual events; Bower, Stone, Martinez win in 5A

THORNTON - Loveland’s Hannah Bower, Green Mountain’s Kelly Stone and Pueblo Central’s Tera Sisson each closed out their four-year high school gymnastics careers on high notes.

And for that matter, Doherty’s Brittnee Martinez also closed out a much shorter prep career on a high note in Saturday’s Class 5A and 4A individual event finals at Thornton High School.

Martinez, who won the 5A all-around title Friday, won the uneven bars and the vault. This has been the only season the University of Michigan bound senior competed in high school.

Bower, who narrowly failed to win her fourth all-around title, won floor exercise while Stone capped her career winning the balance beam.

Sisson nearly made it a clean sweep during the day in 4A. After winning the all-around title for a second time, she closed out by winning the balance beam, floor and vault. Her run was ended by Evergreen’s all-around runner-up, Bethel Lindsley, who won the uneven bars.

“Friday was an emotional drain, but I wouldn’t change it for the world,” said Bower, who won the floor with a score of 9.75. “Brittnee is an amazing gymnast. It has been an awesome career with a lot of amazing people and experiences.

“I did feel the pressure come off, but again I wanted to do the best I could and I feel I did give it my best. I was really mad about my bars because I’ve been sticking my dismount, but I didn’t hit it right. It’s just been an awesome career, though. Thanks to all my coaches and teammates.”

And it was also an emotional night for Loveland coach Wendy Thompson.

“I’m going to miss her,” Thompson said. “Hannah is such an awesome kid and so kind-hearted and so incredible to watch. I’m just going to miss her.”

Martinez started the night on the balance beam, but two falls quickly took her out of contention. That’s when Stone stepped up and won with a score of 9.575. However Martinez came through to score 9.825 on vault and 9.7 on the uneven bars.

“The nerves caught me a little bit on beam and I didn’t have the right mindset,” said Martinez. “Once I was through with beam I felt a lot better as it was just something I had to get out of the way. I was confident on what I had to do the rest of the way.

“It’s been a great year. My teammates, my coaches, everyone have made this special. And, it was special, too, competing against Hannah.”

Stone felt a sense of calmness competing in her final meet.

“I’m shocked, though,” Stone said. “If I had picked an event to win it would not have been beam. But that was probably because I wasn’t nervous like yesterday. I just wanted to go out and have fun. There was not anything riding on it.

“Winning with the team was the best ending that I could have thought off. I’m so happy that I was able to finish good. It’s time to move on, I guess.”

Sisson won the balance beam with a 9.65, the floor with a 9.675 and the vault with a 9.225. Lindsley won the uneven bars with a 9.2, an event in which Sisson placed fourth.

“The beam and floor were really good for me,” said Sisson, who won her first championship as a sophomore. “It’s been a great season and career. My thanks to everyone who has helped. It’s been just awesome.”

Sisson closed out her career, also as a two-time all-around runner-up, being coached by her aunt, Kendra Nogera-Drury.

“I think she finished her career to the best of her ability,” Nogera-Drury said. “We were just one short - four out of five - what more could you ask. You can’t beat that, I think she just did a great job.”

Sisson won the 4A all-around title in Saturday’s competition earlier in the day, but the Wildcats settled for second in the team competition to Evergreen and all-around runner-up, Bethel Lindsley. Sisson scored 37.750 to Lindsley’s 37.125. Evergreen scored 180.125 to Pueblo Central’s 177.6.

Green Mountain won the Class 5A team title Friday, it’s second in the past three years, while Evergreen won the school’s first 4A gymnastics title Saturday afternoon. The all-around competition was completed with the team results.
