Homedig!

Neighborhood watches garden grow

Published May 29, 2008 at 7 p.m.

* Location: Ogden Street in the San Rafael Historic District

* Construction and design: The homeowner has done most of the work himself, with help from neighbors, family and friends. Most of the plants were purchased at discount stores or donated from the gardens of friends.

* Type: Free-form, xeriscape rock garden

* What makes this garden special: The historic San Rafael neighborhood is enjoying a resurgence as people discover its architectural charms, along with its location close to downtown. Almost every block has a beautiful garden, and Ogden Street is no exception. Since this homeowner refurbished his front yard, a number of his neighbors have been inspired to replace thirsty, high-maintenance turf with beautiful, low-water rock gardens.

* Biggest challenge: Converting a neglected, half-dead lawn pocked with weeds into a lush, low-maintenance, low- water rock garden with a small moss-rock wall. Plus: The north side of the lot featured a long retaining wall topped with rock mulch. The owner added plenty of good soil on top of the rock mulch, then planted beautiful groundcover plants that spill over the wall now, delighting passers-by.

* Highlights: This garden sits catty-corner from the historic Zion Baptist Church, where worshippers flock on Sunday mornings. More than once, this homeowner has been approached by a churchgoer who compliments him on his beautiful garden and thanks him for helping make the neighborhood a better place.

* What he likes best: The homeowner added a small ornamental tree - a thornless Cockspur hawthorne - two years ago. He loves the way it occupies center stage in the front yard but still allows the other plants to play important roles. In spring, the chartreuse euphorbia plays a beautiful counterpart to the deep burgundy Rosy-Glow Barberry.

* Final thoughts: Beautiful gardens don't need to cost huge amounts of money. Look around at other gardens and ask questions. Ask friends and family for help. Take it a little bit at a time. Be vigilant about weeds. And don't forget to water - even rock gardens need a drink now and then.
