Legacy baseball coach resigns

Legacy baseball coach Gary Mares resigned his position Tuesday, a move confirmed by athletic director Lee Peters.
Mares, who has been Legacy's coach for eight years, guided the team into this year's Class 5A state baseball tournament.
The Lightning beat Lewis-Palmer and Grand Junction in the District 3 tournament but was forced to forfeit the wins by the Colorado High School Activities Association because it used an ineligible player in all of its district games.
Legacy finished the season with a 12-7 record, which included the forfeits. Mares has been quite successful, earning Front Range League coach of the year honors in 2003, 2004 and 2007 and North Metro coach of the year in 2005 and 2007.
Peters said Mares is not resigning his coaching position because of the incident, which was discovered by the school the Monday after the district tournament.
