Thompson Valley tops in 4A girls track

Published May 17, 2008 at 10:05 p.m.

LAKEWOOD - For Laura Tremblay, four gold medals helped lead Thompson Valley to the big gold trophy Saturday in the Class 4A girls state track meet at Jefferson County Stadium.

Tremblay, who won the 1,600 on Friday, added the 800 to her individual collection, then ran the anchor legs on Thompson Valley’s winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams. As a result, the Eagles won the team title with 78 points to outdistance defending champion Mullen (64) and Longmont (45).

Ironically, Mullen that had won nine of the last 10 championships did not win an individual event in the meet. The Mustangs came through, as usual, for their high finish with team depth.

Tremblay’s win in the 800 kept the title in the schools hands. She took the championship from the hands of teammate Brooke Regan, who was seeking to win her third consecutive title in the 800 with a winning 2-minute, 13.68 effort. Regan, who has been battling injury this season, failed to place in the race.

However, Regan was not without her gold medals, either. She ran legs on Thompson Valley’s winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams, squads that Tremblay anchored. The Eagles won the 800 relay with a time of 1-minute, 42.91 seconds and the 1,600 with a state record in 3:54.45.

“ I just went out there wanting to win,” Tremblay said. “I was a little surprised by the way some of the girls kept up with me. But last week, during a 4 X 800, I ran a 2:12 and I thought I could do that at least again. I just wanted to keep the title in our school.”

Sierra Method and Jessica Forman joined Regan and Tremblay on the winning relay teams.

The top individual of the day, however, was Emily Blok of Conifer who sweeps the 100, 200 and 400-meter events. Blok defended her titles in the 100, winning in 11.80 seconds and the 200 in 24.11. She then tacked on the 400 with a winning 55.69 effort and concluded her day finishing second in the long jump to Moffat County’s Erin Urbanoski.

Blok was most elated by her win in the 400, the event she wanted more than the other two.

“That’s really a tough race,” said Blok, who defeated Cheyenne Mountain’s Joy O’Hare. “It was really a great race. I was nervous for it all day. The last 50, it was just put out for everything. It’s so huge for me go win that one. I’ve been working so hard this year for it. The state title is so big that you can’t expect to win any event.

“I keep it in the back of my head that I’m ranked No. 1, but when it comes down to tenths of a second, you can’t take anything for granted. And in the 100 or 200, anything can happen.”

And in the case of the long jump, it was just a matter of one and ¼ inch that separated Blok from a fourth gold medal. Urbanoski leaped 17-feet, 6 ½ inch to Blok’s 17-5 ¼.

Liz Johnson of Fossil Ridge was able to repeat her title in the discus after coming off anterior cruciate ligament surgery earlier this year. She had a winning throw of 134-4, well off her personal best of 145, but she will take the win over Friday’s shot put champion, Joy Warrington of Widefield who threw 127-8.

“ I was not sure how well I was going to do,” said Johnson, who will attend Colorado State University in the fall. “I was just hoping to get it out there. I was injured at the Mullen Runners Roost in the shot and tore my knee while throwing. I was hoping when I was two good legged that I could beat the state record here, but things happen.

“I really didn’t change my technique, but it was really messed up at the end,” Johnson said. “I just couldn’t get the push off as I usually do, it just missed up the ending.”

Kayla Wein of Broomfield took a big step to a possible four state titles in the 100 hurdles while her teammate, Ashley Miknis won the 300 hurdles.

Wein, a sophomore, won with a time of 14.67 seconds beating Longmont’s Elizabeth Stover (15.02) while Miknis nipped Laura Young of Glenwood Springs with a winning 44.14 to Young’s 44.4.

“I haven’t lost a meet this season except at Mullen to a pair of 5A girls,” Wein said. “There was a lot of pressure to repeat as just about everyone expected it. I would hope, now, to win four.”

Said Miknis, who placed third in the 100 hurdles; “I was third in this race last year. I thought the 100s were going to be mine, but Kayla has taken over there. All I wanted to do was win it. This is pretty much what I cared about this whole season, coming out and winning this race.”

Greeley West’s Kendra Gerk was successful in defense of her title in the 3,200, thus making up for losing her 1,600 championship Friday. Gerk fashioned a winning 10:59.49 to outdistance Alamosa’s Lindsey Sowards (11:12.01).

“I was excited as this was my last high school race,” said Gerk, who lost to Tremblay Friday in the 1,600. “Our coaches and teammates sat down before the race and that helped give us a lot of confidence.”
