Sierra's Dias defends titles at class 4A state championship

Published May 17, 2008 at 9:17 p.m.

LAKEWOOD - The only thing better than winning two state track titles is to come back and double it the following year.

After winning Friday’s long jump, Sierra junior Kelby Dias defended both of his titles in the 110 and 300 hurdles and helped the Stallions win the 800 relay Saturday to claim four state titles at the Class 4A state championship meet at Jefferson County Stadium.

“Four state titles, it’s been a good day,” Dias said. “There’s always a target on your back when you’re the defending state champion coming out here, and everyone gets better every year. Everyone gets better, I have gotten better, so it’s just gets harder and harder. I’m definitely proud I worked as hard as I did.”

But Dias’ four wins weren’t enough to knock off Longmont for the team title, as the Trojans won with 78 points, ahead of Sierra’s 68 and Mullen’s 61.

Longmont was once again paced by senior sprinter Matt Butcher. He finished third in the 100, second in the 400, before defending his claim on the 200. He completed his high school career with another title when he anchored his team’s 1,600 relay with Daniel Berry, Aaron Praska, and Ryan Chopp.

There was no dominant force in the sprinting categories, but Butcher, Widefield’s Patrick Richards and Golden’s Joe Morris all fought each other for their own respective titles.

After Morris beat Richards and Butcher in the 100, Richards came back to beat Butcher in the 400. Butcher rebounded to win the 200, where Richards finished second and Morris finished third.

“If I’m going to lose to anyone in the nation in the 400, it’s Patrick Richards,” Butcher said. “He is one of my great friends and great athlete. Honestly, I set up the race of my life. I set up the best race I’ve ever run and I just didn’t have the strength to finish it.

“But I’ve been saying all year, it’s not going to be easy for anyone.”

Morris agreed. The home-schooled athlete who competes for Golden, runs with an unorthodox sprinting form. But after a solid winter indoor season in the 60-meters, Morris was excited to claim the 100 - the event he finished second in last year.

“I thought it was so cool all three of us each won one event,” Morris said. “And if you asked me, ‘what is everyone’s best race?’ I would have said this, just how it turned out.”

Things didn’t turn out exactly how D’Evelyn senior Kevin Williams wanted. Even though he finished his high school career with his third straight 3,200 title - Williams was racing against the clock, trying to break the all-Colorado record of 9 minutes, 5.89 seconds set by Smoky Hill’s Brent Vaughn in 2003.

Williams barely missed it, finishing with 9:06.27.

Williams, who also recorded his second straight 1,600 win on Friday, ran the first five laps of Saturday’s 3,200 with Falcon’s Wes Rickman before Rickman dropped out of the race with a leg injury. Williams ran the last three laps alone, winning by a margin of more than 25 seconds.

“I’m pretty bummed out,” Williams said. “I mean, I won state and that was the goal upon this, but that time had been there for a long time. I came close, but there’s nothing I can do about it now.”

One athlete that was thrilled with his first individual state title was Mullen junior Andrew Berberick, who claimed the 800 crown with a sizeable victory. Berberick, disappointed with his fourth-place finish in Friday’s 1,600, was not taking any chances on Saturday and jumped to the lead by the first turn. He continued to extend his lead and was never challenged after the first lap, winning with a time of 1:53.56, with Ian Donaldson of Broomfield finishing second in 1:57.01.

“I was in such a bad mood yesterday after the 1,600, but I feel so much better now,” said Berberick, who jumped in to the 3,200 less than an hour after his 800 victory, to earn an impressive fifth-place finish. “I was just really into it today, really focused. This morning I told myself that all I needed to do was my best, and then I’ve got nothing to lose.”

Another impressive junior outing came from Pueblo South’s Ken Harriman, won his second straight title in the shot put with a throw of 55-feet.

“It was a lot harder this year so it feels good to win it,” Harriman said. “Competition got better in trying to beat me, but it was a lot more fun that way.”

Conifer’s Chris Carter won the high jump with a mark of 6-foot-7, after finishing third in the event last year. And Fountain Fort Carson’s Calvin Williams took the triple jump title with his jump of 47-4-¾, defeating Mesa Ridge’s Marcel Gibbons (45-11-¼) and last year’s state champion - Mykal Torres of Mesa Ridge, who finished third with his jump of 45-8.

Windsor’s Scooter Wiles, Brian Hanlin, Bob Barbour, and Matt Hoffman combined to win the 400 relay in a time of 42.49.
