Buena Vista's Mason draws attention, breaks records
Published May 17, 2008 at 9:01 p.m.
PUEBLO — There's no question that Buena Vista High School's Mason Finley was drawing all the attention this weekend at the Class 3A and 2A track meets at Dutch Clark Stadium.
Saturday, all eyes were on Finley as he attempted to break the national prep discus record of 234-feet, 3 inches set by Orem (Utah) Mountain View High School's Niklas Arrhenius in 2001.
The 6-foot-8, 330-pound gentle giant established a Colorado all-classification discus record with a 222-feet, 1 inch mark at last week's regional meet at Bayfield.
Finley, a junior, did break a record Saturday, but it wasn't the one everybody was hoping for. He set a new Class 3A state meet mark with a 211-foot, 6-inch heave on his first throw of the competition at South High School. Roaring Fork's Jon Arauio was a very distant second at 149-feet, 2 inches.
"I would've liked to get the national record, but I'm just happy I won state again," Finley said. "The wind hurt me a little bit and I usually throw better as the competition goes on, but I didn't do that Saturday."
Finley competed at South Saturday because Dutch Clark's discus pit only has a capacity of 190 feet. South's discus pit can accommodate throws up to 300 feet.
"I'm so proud of Mason, he had a good series of throws out there (Saturday) that were all over 200 feet," said Mike Carr, Buena Vista's veteran weight coach. "You're not going to break a record on every throw and now Mason needs to keep on going."
Finley won the discus a year ago with a then-state record heave of 186 feet, 10 inches while competing for Salida. According to Finley's father, Jared Finley, his son transferred to Buena Vista, which is 30 miles north of Salida, because of problems that the Finley family had with the coaching ethics at Salida.
On Friday, Finley recorded a 3A state shot put record with a 64-feet, 9.75 inch heave . The previous 3A shot put record was 58-feet, 4.50 inches set by Faith Christian's Ian Lettow in 2006.
Jim Banich of Arvada set the Colorado prep shot record at 66 feet, 3.25 inches in 1982.
Thanks to Finley's gold medal performances Buena Vista placed second in the team standings with 40 points behind Platte Canyon (52).
This was the first boys state championship in Platte Canyon history.
"It's awesome to see these boys win state," Platte Canyon coach Chris Hendrick said. "There were a lot of teams that had a chance to win state, but our guys just kept working hard and we got a few breaks and we ended up on top."
On Saturday, Platte Canyon won the 800-meter relay, plus A.J. Melillo Thomas Hoffman took gold in the 200 and 1,600-meter runs. respectively to help secure the team crown.
The Classical Academy girls pogram continued to dominate as the Titans captured their third 3A state title in a row. The Titans had 89 points, followed by Peak to Peak (46) and Roosevelt (45).
"It feels great to take state again," said coach Timoth Daggett in his fifth year directing TCA. "We had a lot of injuries this year, but we held the girls together with duct tape and gum and they came through again."
Saturday, the Titans won the 3,200 relay and Kaitlin Hanenburg was tops in the 1,600.
Sam Berggren of Middle Park established a new meet record at 2 minutes, 12.70 seconds when she took gold in the 800. Berggren also captured the 200 and 400 Saturday. She actually set a new meet record in the 400 prelims with a 55.94-second clocking.
Peak to Peak's Margaret Weingart also set a new meet record in the 300 hurdles with a 43.96-second time in prelims and she easily won that event Saturday. Weingart also was member of Peak to Peak's 1,600-relay quartet, which set a state 3A meet record at 4 minutes, 1.82 seconds Saturday.
