Winning state championships is nothing new to Norwood's Stryker Lane.
Lane, a junior, has won consecutive Class 2A state wrestling crowns at 215 and 189 pounds, respectively.
The 6-foot-3 standout added a state discus gold medal to his collection Friday at the 2A track and field championships at Dutch Clark Stadium.
"It feels good to get my third state title in high school," Lane said. "I came in as the favorite, and it's nice to get this state championship under my belt."
Lane won his first prep track gold medal with a school- record toss of 161 feet, 9 inches.
"That was my best throw of the year," said Lane, who placed third in the event last year. "Everything just came together, and it felt really good."
Israel Garay of Wiggins came in second with a 155-5 throw.
"I broke my own school record with that (155-5) mark, so I feel good about what I was able to do," said Garay, a senior. "I knew coming into this event I was the underdog to Stryker, but I threw my best ever and I'm happy about my effort."
Lane had a 156-10 throw during preliminaries, then surpassed that mark on his final attempt of the event.
Lane will try to snare a second gold medal, at 12:30 p.m. today, when he competes in the shot put.
"I have the top throw in the state, at 51 feet, 4 inches, but I know there's going to be a lot of tough competition to win," Lane said.
Other boys winners Friday were Rocky Ford's Victor Montoya (1,600 meters), Holyoke's Kyle Carper (long jump) and Hi-Plains' Kent Herman (high jump).
"I just relaxed and went out there and ran my race," said Montoya, a junior, who has won the event three years in a row. "I saved some energy so I could make that push at the end."
Dan Baer of Dayspring Christian set a 2A state meet record with a 14.49-second preliminary time in the 110-meter hurdles. Baer, a senior, is the defending state champion in the event.
Crested Butte's Emma Coburn took the gold in the 1,600 meters for the fourth year in a row, with a personal-best time of 5 minutes, 11.92 seconds. Coburn also has won two 3,200-meter state titles and one 800-meter crown. She will be competing in those events today.
"This feels great to win again, and now I have to just be ready (today) to race," said Coburn, who will compete in track at the University of Colorado.
Sangre de Cristo's Brittany Brown won the discus for the second consecutive year, with a 129-foot mark.
"That wasn't my best throw of the season, but it still feels great to win state, especially with this being my senior year," Brown said.
Akron's Erin Krause won gold in the pole vault, and Nikki Lippitt of Byers claimed top honors in the long jump.
Shaylee Robinette of Crowley County will try to snare four state championships today for the second year in a row in the 100, 200 and 400 sprints and the triple jump. The senior won the 200, 400 and triple jump as a sophomore.
Lyons leads the 2A boys and girls standings, with 29 and 25 points, respectively.
