Kent Denver spoils Regis' upset bid

Published May 13, 2008 at 11:16 p.m.

For a short time Tuesday night, it appeared the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team had a chance to spring an upset on Kent Denver in the state semifinals at All City Stadium.

Regis goalie Troy Orzech had a six-save first quarter and less than a minute into the second quarter, Mike Gordon scored to tie the score.

Then the Sun Devils regained their form. Michael Reilly blasted a shot past Orzech to spark a 5-0 run by Kent Denver, leading the Sun Devils back to the state championship game with a convincing 10-3 victory.

"They stuck with us, and it was good test to see if we were going to be able to run with a team awhile and pull away at the end," Reilly said.

The Sun Devils had too many weapons for Regis (14-5) to defend.

Moses Taylor had four goals and one assist, Reilly and Frazier Cavness each had two goals and midfielder Patrick Murray contributed a goal and two assists.

"They did well in facing it," Regis coach Jim Soran said. "We had a couple mental mistakes in the second period and they capitalized on it. They are very well- coached and very skilled."

Taylor said Regis had success squeezing the Sun Devils at midfield in a match earlier in the season, but the plan didn't work a second time.

"They started to pressure the midfield real hard, and they let the back doors open for the attack to get inside," Taylor said. "We have four guys who can really stick the ball into the back of the net, and I feel like we just wore them down and we were able to break it open."

Kent's defense concentrated on attackers Greyson Konkel and C.J. Schmidt to put the brakes on a Regis attack that scored 10 goals in a quarterfinal victory against Chatfield.

"Greyson and Schmidt were their two big guns, and we game- planned for them," Sun Devils defenseman Henry Clark said.

"We tried to make sure our slides were early so we could double them if they got inside. We knew that Lucien (Reichert) would be ready in the cage, and we just tried to disrupt their shots."

The win, coupled with Saturday's 16-5 victory against Mullen in the quarterfinals, gives the Sun Devils (17-1) a huge wave of momentum heading into Saturday's 4:30 p.m. state championship game at Invesco Field at Mile High, where Kent Denver will meet Fort Collins.

The Vipers beat the Sun Devils by a goal in last year's meeting and a rematch works perfectly in the Sun Devils' plans to win their first state title since 2004.

"It was a heartbreaker last year," Clark said. "It was tough. But we can't be overconfident going into that game."
