While this spring might have been one of the worst-weather seasons for track and field in recent memory, it also might go down as one of the best for blooming talent on the Colorado scene.

With a handful of nationally ranked athletes and feats that might never be outdone, the 2008 Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado track team is led by outstanding individuals in four categories, including sprints/hurdles, distance, weight events and jumping events.

Sierra hurdler Kelby Dias was the only athlete to chalk up four wins at the Class 4A state meet.

The junior defended his titles in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, helped his team win the 800 relay and surprised even himself with a win in the long jump.

D'Evelyn's Kevin Williams won his third consecutive 4A 3,200 title, falling only .38 of a second short of a state record. He won six high school titles and will head to the University of Oklahoma.

Mason Finley of Buena Vista made a mark on the national throwing scene when his discus toss of 222 feet, 1 inch became the third-best mark ever by a U.S. high school athlete.

"When I threw 222, I knew I had (a personal record), but I didn't know that I had thrown that far, so I was pretty surprised," said the 6-foot-8, 330-pound junior, who won the shot put and discus at the 3A state meet for the second year in a row.

Cherry Creek's Roman Holmes quietly broke the 18-year-old state record in the long jump with his leap of 24-111/2. Two weeks later at the 5A state meet, he claimed the long-jump and triple- jump titles and helped the Bruins win the 400 relay.

Conifer junior Emily Blok defended her titles in the 100 and 200 at the 4A state meet and added another title in the 400 and a second-place finish in the long jump.

Meanwhile, Air Academy's Allie McLaughlin won her first state title in the 3,200, recording Colorado's second-fastest mark in the event with a time of 10:49.46.

Hayden junior Holli Salazar won the 2A shot-put title, and her toss of 41-73/4 was the best mark for any classification.

Also, Longmont's Elizabeth Stover bettered her own 4A state meet record to end her high school pole-vaulting career with a best effort of 13-3. She's headed to Purdue University.

Matt Norton led Thompson Valley to the 4A girls team title after finishing second last year, and Longmont coach Tim McIntire led the Trojans to the school's first boys team title since 1950.
