FORT COLLINS - The highly-anticipated Class 4A state swimming match up between defending champion Ralston Valley and contender Rock Canyon started off with plenty of excitement, another state record, and a whole lot of drama.
After Rock Canyon’s 200 medley relay team broke their own day-old record in the first event of the state swimming championships Saturday at the Edora Pool and Ice Center in Fort Collins, Taylor Curado and Londyn Clawson both jumped back into the competition pool to join anchor Jehan Atoe in a cool down, however, Atoe was the only swimmer allowed to remain in the pool. Colorado High School Activities Association rules state that once a swimmer leaves the pool, that swimmer may not re-enter.
The officials and coaches held a meeting and deliberated for nearly 30 minutes, before it was decided that Curado and Clawson would each be disqualified for their next race. Clawson missed swimming in the consolation heat of the 200 individual medley, and Curado was forced to miss swimming in the championship heat of the 50 freestyle.
The drama stole the Jaguars’ early momentum, and Ralston Valley took advantage to win it’s second state title with 302 points, ahead of Ralston Valley (269-½), Thompson Valley (161) and Estes Park (159.)
“It was more of a misunderstanding on my part, and I take responsibility for that,” said Curado, who managed to come back and defend her 100 butterfly title. “It did more mentally and physically take a toll on us than we thought, and we had to come back from that. But we stayed in it, and we are so happy.
“Finishing second is definitely not a bad thing.”
Along with 100-backstroke champion Kirsten Milberg, Curado, Clawson and Atoe’s time of 1 minute, 4.30 seconds in the 200 medley broke the record of 1:48.98 the Jaguars set in Friday’s prelims, but the Jaguars would have had to be at their best to beat the top-ranked Mustangs, who got big performances from leaders Katie Johnson and Arianne Lujan.
Johnson and Lujan swapped spots in the 200 individual medley, with Johnson taking the title this year and Lujan finishing second. Lujan also finished second to Curado in the 100 butterfly, and Johnson finished second in the 500 freestyle to Fossil Ridge senior Shannon Garlie.
And Johnson said she feels like the drama that unfolded at the beginning of the meet gave the Mustangs momentum.
“We were really nervous because they may have had an edge coming into today,” said Johnson, who along with Lujan also helped Ralston Valley finish second to Rock Canyon in the 400 freestyle relay. “We knew that it was going to be really, really close between us and them, and having that happen early on, it helped us calm down and gave us some confidence heading into the rest of the meet.
“It was a lot of fun, and more fun than last year because we get to repeat, and that is really hard to do.”
Estes Park twins Kenzie and Lauren Hewson had impressive meets, with Kenzie winning the 100 freestyle and Lauren winning the 100 breaststroke, before combining to give Estes Park the crown in the 200 freestyle relay.
“This was a perfect ending for us,” Lauren Hewson said. “It was so unbelievable for us to share this together.”
Kenzie, who finished second in the 50 freestyle, agrees. “This ending is just amazing for us. Finishing with best times, first places, it’s almost overwhelming.”
Kenzie Hewson surprised Mullen senior Caroline Shea in the 100 freestyle. Shea, who won the event last year and won the 200 freestyle Saturday, thought she had won the race before looking at the clock and seeing the times. Hewson recorded a 53.05, to Shea’s 53.08.
“I thought I had it, I really did,” Shea said. “I was worried about one of the other girls, so she surprised me. But still, I had my best time, I had a great meet. I was really nervous for today, and it was just so great for me.”
Moffat County senior Kelsey Conci won the 50 freestyle, the event she finished second in last year.
“Seeing that first place in the 50 free, that was awesome for me,” said Conci, who also finished second in the 100 backstroke. “I’ve been working for that race for four years, so I am so happy to win that one.”
