Cherry Creek volleyball players named All-American

PREP NOTEBOOK

* Two players from Cherry Creek's undefeated state champion were named to the third Under Armour High School All-America volleyball team last week.

Carrie Baird, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter headed to the University of San Diego, was picked first-team All-America, one of only 24 players nationwide to earn that honor. Baird was chosen by the Rocky as the most valuable player in the Class 5A state tournament and the All-Colorado player of the year.

Baird will play in the inaugural Under Armour All-American match and skills competition, featuring the top two dozen players. The All-America team is composed of seniors from 23 states and 44 high schools. The match will take place Dec. 21 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, the day after the NCAA Division I championship match.

Also, Gabi Dewberry, a 5-8 setter/ right-side hitter for the Bruins, was chosen second-team All-America, which honors 24 more players. Dewberry has signed to play at Cal State Fullerton.

* ALL-STATE FOOTBALL: The Rocky again is conducting its all-state football process online. Coaches who would like to participate, please send an e-mail to valeriog@RockyMountain News.com. Those responding will receive a return e-mail with a link to the online ballot. The deadline is Dec. 11.

* GOT MILK? The 12th National "Got Milk?" Milk Mustache campaign, in partnership with USA Today, is under way. The award recognizes 25 student-athletes nationally for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. Winners earn a $7,500 college scholarship and an appearance in a milk mustache ad in USA Today. Information: Sammy.BodybyMilk.com.

* ETC.: Lookout Academy has discontinued its boys basketball program. The team was scheduled to compete in the Class 3A Metro League this season. . . . The Regis Jesuit girls basketball team is ranked No. 19 nationally by USA Today. . . . The Fort Collins girls cross country team, which won the Class 5A state title in October, qualified for the national championships Saturday in Portland, Ore., by winning the Southwest regional at the Nike Cross Nationals last month.
