Fair attendance holds steady despite DNC

Published August 27, 2008 at 12:05 a.m.

Gas prices, tornadoes, changing demographics and the Democratic National Convention aren't enough to keep Colorado State Fair fans from their annual appointment with fun.

Attendance totaled 147,735 for the first four days of the fair, which opened Friday in Pueblo, says Christi Lightcap, the fair's director of communications.

"In 2007 at this same time, the admissions were 147,849," she said. She attributed sales to the modest admission price and free entertainment, including monkey, sea lion and tiger shows, daredevils, puppeteers, mutton- bustin' and music.

Concerts by the Guess Who (Thursday) and Colbie Caillat (Friday) are $10 (including gate admission) if purchased before the shows. Admission tickets for today and Thursday are $2 at Loaf 'N Jug stores.

"It doesn't seem like gas prices are affecting us except that folks don't seem to be spending quite as much," said general manager Chris Wiseman, adding the other big event in the state this week isn't a factor.

"Most of the people attending the Democratic National Convention are from out of state, while the State Fair attracts mainly folks from Colorado," Wiseman said.
