Littleton scores early, often in shocking opener

Published August 22, 2008 at 10:48 p.m.

The Littleton football team was off to a lightning-quick start in a nonleague Zero Week game Friday in a 47-0 victory against George Washington.

Class 4A Littleton scored the first three times it touched the ball, making use of only eight offensive plays and an interception to build a 20-0 lead with 3 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

But no sooner had the Lions gained their lead at Littleton Public Schools Stadium, play was halted for 53 minutes by lightning in the first quarter.

It took Littleton only two plays to score its first touchdown this season. After taking a GW punt, tailback Noah Gaumer spurted for a 15-yard gain that was followed by a 42-yard touchdown run by Jessen Kirchner with 7:46 left in the first quarter.

"We just came out to play," said Kirchner, who rushed for 100 yards and scored three touchdowns. "And then when we got back out after the lightning break, we were ready again. Our team was all fired up in the locker room and we just stayed ready. All around, this was a good way to come out in Zero Week."

Littleton's second possession took a bit longer, five plays. It went up 14-0 as quarterback Blake Buder passed 20 yards to Brian Holland with 4:16 left in the first.

On the second play of GW's next possession, Patriots quarterback Keenan Black was intercepted by Alex Keiderling at the Patriots' 36- yard line. Keiderling returned it to the 9-yard line, and Gaumer scored on the next play.

Unfortunately for GW, playing at the 5A level, the Littleton strikes continued after the weather break. The Lions made it 40-0 at halftime on 30- yard and 1-yard touchdown runs by Kirchner and a scoring run by Gaumer.

It didn't end after halftime, either, as Littleton's Mister Jones used the second play of the third quarter for a 52- yard touchdown run. Jones, who rushed for 140 yards on only five carries, pulled his hamstring on the play and left for the remainder of the game.
