Kent Denver able to get its revenge
Reichert records shutout against defending champs

ENGLEWOOD Lucien Reichert wasn't expecting a shutout Wednesday against defending boys lacrosse state champion Fort Collins. What the Kent Denver goaltender wanted was a little revenge after the Vipers beat Kent Denver by one goal in last season's state championship.
He ended up getting both in the Sun Devils' 6-0 nonleague victory over Fort Collins at Sun Devils Stadium.
Reichert made eight saves and the No. 3 Sun Devils played stellar defense in front of him. Rarely was the senior goaltender shielded off from a shot, and he saw the ball exceptionally well all game.
"That's all a tribute to my defense," he said. "They played a great game. I'm just back there to make the easy saves after they do the work.
Reichert said the Sun Devils (13-1) had been waiting for the rematch after suffering the bitter loss in last season's finale.
"This one has been marked on the calendar all year," he said. "I don't think one of us has stopped thinking about how it felt to lose by one goal at state. We worked our butts off today to get this win and we're pretty excited about it."
Willie Strazza started the Sun Devils off with a bounce shot that found the net with 8:36 left in the first quarter, and midfielder Michael Reilly scored twice in the second quarter to give the Sun Devils a commanding 4-0 halftime lead.
Fort Collins (10-3) seemed to find some life early in the second half after Greg Rushing got the best of a violent collision with Sun Devils midfielder David Key, but Reichert prevented the No. 1 Vipers from capitalizing on the momentum. With 3:15 left in the third quarter he made a clean save on a shot by Fort Collins Tyler Whitcomb, and two minutes later he went down to his knees to make a stick save on Eric Newman. The ball bounced out of his webbing, but he calmly caught it in the air to prevent Fort Collins from snatching the rebound.
"Our defense really won this game for us," Reilly said. "In the first quarter it seemed like we played at least 10 minutes of defense and they did a great job to prevent (Fort Collins) from scoring."
Kent Denver's six goals were its season-low output for a game, and Fort Collins coach Carey Smith said the Vipers defense did its job but the offense couldn't match the effort.
"I thought our defense played really well," Smith said. "They did their job. But offensively, we didn't have the patience we needed today. We didn't test their goaltender enough with good shots, but he had a good game. But we'll take our beating now and get ready for the playoffs."
