Girlz 'n da Hoodie

Published March 22, 2007 at midnight

Humble athletic beginnings? So long. Oversize, '80s hip-hop craze? Old news. Today's hoodies, while certainly borrowing from their sporty and street roots, are all about the art of high fashion.

With stylish details (think puckered shoulders, cropped lengths and subtle shades) and high-end fabrics (from leather to cashmere), these hoodies are just as easily jeans-and-a-tank-top casual as they are cocktail-coverup cool.

We invited two local street artists, who go by the names Voice and Spite, to visit our photo studio and paint a mural, complete with a hooded sweatshirt built in. The results? A whirl of color and energy - a perfect match to the new hoodie vibe.

About the artists

Art from Denver graffiti writer Voice has been featured in local galleries and at the Boulder Museum of Contempory Art. He spray-painted a mural for the Children's Museum and has created murals for bands including Pennywise, The Pharcyde and Common. He is part of the SWSocietyArtistCollective. Contact him at lavasoup@gmail.com.

Street artist Spite is also an accomplished DJ. He spins at local clubs such as Vinyl, The Church and 2AM, as well as national gigs.
