NUMBERS GAME
12 will be the number worn by Steve Finley who has worn that number most of his career but initially was given 21 with the Rockies because 12 had belonged to Clint Barmes. Barmes is now with Triple-A Colorado Springs. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki changed his number from 14 to 2, and third base coach Mike Gallego, who had worn No. 2, will wear No. 4.
FINAL 25
Outfielder John Mabry won the battle for the final roster spot, beating out Ryan Spilborghs, who was optioned to Colorado Springs, and Alexis Gomez, who was designated for assignment with the hope he will clear waivers and join Colorado Springs.
"Mabry's experience speaks to our needs," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "His health is good, and we asked him to do an assortment of things this spring, which he handled well."
Hurdle said he expects Spilborghs to be in the big leagues at some time this season, and the same is true for Gomez if he can remain with the organization.
GAME DAY
Outfielder Brad Hawpe, out the past three days because of a sprained left ankle, is expected to play in the opener Monday. He went through a series of drills with the trainers before Colorado's 5-3 exhibition loss to the Sky Sox on Friday at Security Service Field in Colorado Springs. . . . Right-handed Ubaldo Jimenez, pitching for the Rockies, worked four scoreless innings before becoming the victim of a four-run Sky Sox fifth inning in which Seth Smith singled to drive in two runs. . . . Matt Holliday was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double. . . . The Rockies have today off to get settled in Denver and will work out at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon in preparation for Opening Day against Arizona on Monday at Coors Field.
