COLORADO SPRINGS -- Veteran left-handed hitter John Mabry earned the final spot on the Rockies roster.
Ryan Spilborghs was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday, and outfielder Alexis Gomez was designated for assignment, giving the Rockies 10 days to deal with his contract. The team is hopeful Gomez will clear waivers and can be assigned to Colorado Springs.
Mabry won the three-man battle because of his veteran presence. He primarily will be a left-handed bat off the bench, but during the spring he showed he could fill in at first base, third base and the outfield.
"Mabry's experience speaks to our needs,'' Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "His health is good, and we asked him to do an assortment of things this spring, which he handled well.''
Hurdle said he expects Spilborghs to be in the big leagues at some time this season, and the same is true for Gomez if remains with the organization.
"Those are two guys we need to play in case we have a situation where we need someone to come up and help us in a situation,'' Hurdle said.
Hurdle also said outfielder Brad Hawpe, out the past three days because of a sprained ankle, went through all the drills he was asked to handle Friday and should be ready to play in Monday's season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
