Popular Titantic exhibit coming to Denver this summer

Published March 30, 2007 at midnight

A 4,000-pound piece of the Titanic will dock in Denver this summer.

The piece - a section of hull - is part of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which will open June 22 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

"The Titanic is such a touchstone culturally for most Americans that by the time you're 6 years old, you know the story of what the Titanic was," said the museum's president and CEO, George Sparks. "It has a very broad appeal."

Museum officials expect the exhibit to draw 325,000 people during its six-month run. The museum's last blockbuster exhibit - Body Worlds 2 - attracted 687,000 people.

The Titantic exhibit, produced by Atlanta-based RMS Titanic Inc., which has exclusive salvage rights to the wreckage, has been viewed by 18 million people worldwide. It offers a detailed look inside the ship, providing the story behind its nearly three-year construction, accounts from passengers and more than 300 artifacts.

Other elements include:

Re-creations of the ship's first-class and third-class cabins, the veranda and the boiler room.

Artifacts ranging from recovered jewelry to dining room china.

An iceberg wall simulating the frigid waters where the ocean liner sank.

An audio tour featuring personal stories from the ship's passengers and crews.
