NUMBERS GAME

7 consecutive 100-point seasons for the Red Wings, one short of the NHL record set by the Canadiens from 1974-75 through 1981-82. Detroit also will be in the playoffs for the 16th year in a row, the NHL's longest active streak.

STORM WARNING

The Hurricanes might miss the playoffs one year after winning the Stanley Cup, which isn't all that rare.

But the Oilers, whom the Hurricanes beat to win the championship, already are out of the postseason picture, so it's possible both finalists will be eliminated.

At least the Hurricanes still have a chance. They were only two points out of the playoffs after Thursday's games - but needed to climb past three teams to get there.

The Hurricanes have five games left, including two against the Lightning, one of the teams they're chasing.

"We need to win every game from here on in," forward Cory Stillman said. "Five games left and we have to go 5-0 to have a chance."

Gee, that sounds awfully familiar.

HE SAID IT

"He wants everyone to know he thinks he should get a watch, not a puck."

Mike Babcock, Red Wings coach, on goalie Dominik Hasek's milestone 75th career shutout.
