Feds assess tornado damage
Published March 30, 2007 at midnight
HOLLY Workers with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are touring this tornado-ravaged town on Colorado's eastern plains to begin assessing the damage from an early season tornado.
A woman was killed, at least seven people injured and five dozen homes damaged by a powerful twister that struck without warning a few minutes before 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, R-Fort Morgan, arrived in town at 10:30 a.m. today to tour the area.
County officials are asking that people who are not working with relief agencies to avoid coming to town to offer assistance or to sightsee because it would interfere with relief efforts.
"This is not Disneyland," said Chris Sorensen, of the Kiowa Emergency Management agency who is acting as spokesman for Prowers County.
"This is an area where people's lives have been affected," Sorensen said.
Donations of tarps, plywood and bottled water are being sought. Donors are asked to deliver them to the Colorado East Bank and Trust in Holly.
More than 250 dump truck loads of debris were hauled from the town Thursday, Sorensen said.
"I was amazed and absolutely stunned by the cleanup," he said.
A federal disaster declaration is pending.
