Canadiens sticking with hot Halak

Published March 30, 2007 at midnight

MONTREAL - David Aebischer has lost his job. Again.

The former Avalanche goalie can call himself a backup in Montreal after coach Guy Carbonneau said rookie Jaroslav Halak has the starter's job.

Halak, the starter in each of Montreal's five consecutive victories, will be in goal tonight against the Senators in Ottawa.

"If he wins, he'll be in there Saturday night, and if he wins again, he'll be there Tuesday night," Carbonneau told Canadian Press.

"If he loses? I haven't figured that out yet."

NO TO SUMMIT SERIES: The NHL has rejected Russia's invitation to revive the Summit Series in the fall.

Canadian Web site TSN.ca reported while the NHL acknowledges the 1972 Series as one of the most significant events in the history of hockey, it won't support or approve Russia's interest in bringing it back to life.

DINNER FOR BELIVEAU: Many former NHL greats and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper turned out to honor legendary Canadiens captain Jean Beliveau.

About $1 million was expected to be raised for six children's hospitals and charities.

"It's hard to have the right words to describe it," Beliveau said before the event. "I've been retired from hockey for 35 or 36 years and I'm always amazed to have so many invitations and having nights like this."

Beliveau played for 10 Stanley Cup-winning Montreal teams.

NEW BLUES MINORITY OWNER: Tom Stillman, owner of Summit Distributing, is the new minority partner of the Blues. Stillman, 55 and the son-in-law for former U.S. Sen. John Danforth, is a longtime St. Louis resident.

SALO EXTENSION: Sami Salo signed a four-year extension with the Canucks.

The 32-year-old Salo made $1.5 million this season and would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency in the summer. Terms of the extension were not made public.
