Worth the drive
Published March 29, 2007 at midnight
While most of the school districts in the metro area are on spring break, there still are several top upcoming high school events that are worth the drive:
Thursday
Baseball: Longmont at Silver Creek, 4 p.m. Longmont proved itself a Class 4A Northern League contender by knocking off seventh-ranked Skyline earlier in the season. On the other side, the host Raptors already have upended defending state champion Broomfield in league play. City bragging rights also will be at issue. One player to watch: Longmont pitcher Trevor Juth has gone 2-0 this season while compiling a 1.00 ERA in 14 innings with nine strikeouts. There also is an intriguing matchup in Class 3A when top-ranked Faith Christian travels to meet preseason No. 3 Brush.
Girls soccer: Aurora Central at Cherokee Trail, 6 p.m. The visiting Trojans begin Skyline League play against a Cherokee Trail club trying to make a move against one of the league favorites.
Friday
Girls soccer: Holy Family at No. 1 Faith Christian, 7 p.m. The Class 3A Metro League is as competitive as ever. Previously top-ranked Kent Denver was dropped by Colorado Academy last week. Now, under the lights, unranked Holy Family, which posted shutouts in three of its first four games, takes its shot at the Eagles, the new No. 1 in 3A.
Saturday
Boys swimming: Colorado Coaches Invitational, 9 a.m., Mountain View High School. The state meet isn't until May, but this event, also known as the Dick Rush Memorial, should provide a preview. The top two ranked teams in Class 5A (Regis, Cherry Creek) and 4A (Thompson Valley, Silver Creek) will be in attendance. Regis will be led by Jay Kim, above, among others. In addition, the annual Hoyt Brawner Award, recognizing the top all-around senior swimmer/diver, will be presented.
Baseball: Matters get interesting in the 3A Patriot League. Valley will be at perennial power and No. 2 Eaton, and seventh-ranked University travels to meet a No. 8 Erie club off to a strong start this season.
