First discovered in Westminster, 2nd in Lakewood

WESTMINSTER - Police are investigating the deaths of two people found floating in water Wednesday, including a man who was discovered in a golf course retaining pond.

The links at the Golf Course at Hyland Hills near West 92nd Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard were closed for about three hours after groundskeepers found the body of a man in his mid-20 to 30s about 11:40 a.m., Westminster Police spokesman Trevor Materasso said.

No obvious signs of foul play were found, but for now police are investigating that case as if it were a homicide, Materasso said.

Joann Saitta, a spokeswoman for the Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District, said that the incident was the first of its kind at the course, which opened in the 1960s.

"It's a place for recreation and fun," Saitta said. "It's shocking, to say the least, so we're very disturbed about it."

About 90 golfers had to delay their game until after the Westminster Fire Department dive team retrieved the body from the pond. The area is one where golfers and groundskeepers pass everyday, Saitta said.

"At first, they (the groundskeepers) thought it was just debris floating in the lake, and on closer inspection, it was a body. It was pretty upsetting," Saitta said.

The employees who made the discovery were allowed to take the rest of the day off, she said.

In an unrelated case, Lakewood police said that a jogger found the body of a woman in her late 50s or early 60s about 11 a.m. in a reservoir near West Florida Avenue and South Kipling Street.

Police spokesman Steve Davis said that an autopsy was pending but that initial indications point to an accidental or natural death. The woman did have identification on her, but police were withholding her name until her relatives could be notified.
