I Can't Believe It's Not Butter! Mediterranean Blend
Bonnie: Don't believe all the label hype saying this new Mediterranean Blend is "made with olive oil" and contains "no trans fats." It does contain olive oil, but only as part of a vegetable-oil blend that also includes liquid soybean oil and partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Meaning, there's just enough olive oil in it for I Can't Believe It's Not Butter! to brag about. As for trans fats, any ingredient list that includes "partially hydrogenated oil" contains some trans fat. Our government allows a product containing less than .5-gram of trans fat per serving to be rounded down to zero.
Carolyn: The "Mediterranean" refers only to the olive oil this blend contains. Olive oil is the second-to-last oil ingredient in the regular version of this vegetable-oil blend - i.e., not enough to taste. So Mediterranean Blend tastes almost exactly like plain ICBINB! I think Country Crock tastes more like butter.
Stouffer's Corner Bistro Flatbreads
Shrimp & Roasted Garlic, Steak Fajita, Margherita and Chicken, Bacon & Spinach
$3.99 per 9 1/4- to 9 1/2-ounce box of frozen pizza.
Bonnie: Stouffer's recently added flatbreads to its Corner Bistro line of entrees and panini sandwiches. And I don't like these any more than I liked those.
Each flatbread is much too big a portion for most already-overweight Americans - that is, unless you're a competitive athlete or a lumberjack. Each is high in total fat (19 to 29 grams, 30 percent to 45 percent of the daily limit), saturated fat (9 to 14 grams, 45 percent to 69 percent of the daily limit) and sodium (610 to 960 milligrams, 25 percent to 40 percent of the daily limit) - and that's in just 540 to 600 calories.
For a brief second, I considered cutting one flatbread into 12 squares and serving them as appetizers to cut down on those hefty nutrients. But I like my guests too much to serve them something so fatty, salty and off-tasting.
Carolyn: I think Bonnie is being way too harsh on these. These are full-fat, full-calorie regular-red-box Stouffer's selections, Bonnie, not Lean Cuisine. And all the fat, calories and sodium deliver a lot of flavor. The Shrimp & Roasted Garlic was the taste winner, with the Steak Fajita a close second.
Thomas' Muffins and Breads
100 Calorie Original English Muffins; and Plain, Everything, and 100 Percent Whole Wheat Mini Squares Bagelbread
$3.59 per 11-ounce package of six English muffins or 16- ounce bag of eight Mini Bagelbreads
Bonnie: Thomas' new English muffins have 20 fewer calories, 1 fewer gram of fat and 4 more grams of fiber than the regular. The Mini Squares contain about half the calories and fat of Thomas' regular Bagelbread . Both of these new products contain at least half a serving of whole grains. I can recommend these for those looking to increase their whole grains and cut calories.
Carolyn: The 100 Calorie English Muffin appears to achieve its 20-calorie savings via its slightly smaller size, which would have been OK if that's all that Thomas' had done. But it also added whole wheat and fiber that lend a bitter aftertaste.
And where bagelwiches are difficult to bite into and hamburger and sandwich rolls can wilt under wet dressings, Mini Squares Bagelbread solves both problems and is a better size for kids and the weight-conscious.
