Fort Collins uses bloop single in eighth to beat Arvada in slugfest

Published March 28, 2007 at midnight

ARVADA - Perhaps it was fitting that in a game that featured 28 hits, 25 runs and three home runs, it was a bloop single that tipped the scales.

Fort Collins and Arvada played a wild eight-inning game Tuesday afternoon, and when the dust settled, it was the visiting Lambkins who escaped with a 15-10 win in a Class 5A nonleague game.

The loss halted Arvada's six-game win streak start to the season.

With the score tied 10-10 in the top of the seventh, Fort Collins right fielder Brian Jenkins blooped a ball into right field to score Garret Houts with the go-ahead run. Houts had singled to lead off the inning and finished 4-for-5 with three RBI.

"The go-ahead run was huge," Jenkins said. "It was a (lousy) hit, but it fell, so that's all that matters."

Not so weak was Jenkins' bases-clearing double in the fifth that tied it 8-8. Fort Collins (4-3), playing its second in-state game, took a 10-9 lead in the sixth on a two-run home run by Houts.

Arvada tied it 10-10 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Chad Brens. The Reds had a chance to win it in the seventh, but Lambkins reliever and winner Caleb Vickers struck out cleanup hitter Ryan Smith with a runner on third to send it to extra innings.

"A lot of people have questioned how Arvada is 6-0, and I think we showed how," Reds coach Brad Mulvaney said.

"We had chances to win. In the bottom of the seventh, we could have won, and take away the second inning (when Reds fielding miscues led to two Fort Collins runs)."

Fort Collins also received homers from Zach Johnston and Hanz Broman, the No. 8 and 9 hitters who connected for successive homers in the fourth.

After taking the 11-10 lead, Fort Collins scored another run on an RBI infield single by Broman, then pushed the lead to five when Joe Schmidtbauer's routine fly ball to left got hung up in the wind and dropped, clearing the bases.

"It definitely wasn't a five-run game," Mulvaney said.
