80-year-old woman hospitalized after Wheat Ridge carjacking

Published March 28, 2007 at midnight

Two men were arrested by police yesterday after they allegedly carjacked a 1999 Mercedes from an 80-year-old woman in the parking lot of the Stage Stop Antique Mall in the 7300 block of West 44th Avenue in Wheat Ridge.

Julius A. Suarez, 21, and Joseph A. Ferguson, 20, both of Denver, were held at the Jefferson County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery and aggravated motor vehicle theft.

Wheat Ridge police spokeswoman Lisa Stigall said the carjacking took place about 2 p.m. yesterday. When the victim and a witness tried to stop the men, the victim was knocked to the ground by the car. She was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Stigall said that within minutes of stealing the vehicle, the suspects wrecked it at West 49th Avenue and Eaton Street in Denver and fled on foot into the neighborhood around Inspiration Point.

Denver police activated the reverse 911 system in the area and neighbors contacted police with information regarding the location of one of the carjacking suspects, and just after 4 p.m. police located and arrested Suarez at a home in the 5100 block of Eaton Street in Denver.

Ferguson was arrested about 4:20 p.m. while hiding in a residence in the 5700 block of Clear Creek Drive in Denver.

Both suspects are scheduled to be arraigned today in Jefferson County Courts.
