Grieving dad seeks tougher DUI laws

Published March 27, 2007 at midnight

GYPSUM — The father of a 19-year-old Mesa State College student killed by a suspected drunk driver said today he and his wife will fight for stronger laws "to change the DUI process and address high speed chases."

Vern Brock spoke to the media before the start of a funeral Mass this afternoon for Jacob "Jake" Brock at Eagle Valley High School. Hundreds of people turned out for the Mass.

Vern Brock said he had no specific legislation in mind. "Let’s get all the facts and information together, get all the people in a room, and go from there," he said.

Last Thursday night, police say, Patrick Strawmatt, 42, a former Lafayette police officer, slammed into a car carrying Brock and his girlfriend, Jennifer Kois, a 19-year-old Mesa State student from Brighton, who also died.

Police say Strawmatt, a Wheat Ridge resident, was traveling at 120 mph from a pursuing Colorado State Patrol trooper when the crash occurred on Interstate 70 near Clifton.

A funeral Mass for Kois will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 3141 W. 96th Ave., Westminster.
