NEVER TOO OLD

Barbara Hillary, a 75-year-old Queens, N.Y., resident, has set her sights on becoming the first black woman to reach the North Pole.

She plans to begin her journey April 20 from Longyearbyen, Norway, where her group will depart for what will become a cross country ski expedition to the pole.

Hillary said she has been training by pulling a bag of sand on a sled at the beach.

She is driven to the challenge, in part, to pay tribute to black explorer Matt Henson, who many historians believe played a crucial role in the success of Robert Peary's first trip to the North Pole.

Hillary, a lung cancer survivor, hopes to raise a flag at the pole in support of lung cancer research.
