Chiefs still in power
Published March 27, 2007 at midnight
Kaiser Chiefs
Yours Truly, Angry Mob, Universal.
Grade: A-
The British band's 2005 debut, Employment, was so full of strong songwriting that there wasn't much concern about a slump this time around.
And there was no need. This album continues the Kaiser Chiefs' M.O. of catchy rock infused with wry, sometimes-twisted lyrics looking at society. Just the song titles - Love's Not a Competition (but I'm Winning) and Everything Is Average Nowadays - give you a pretty good idea of where these guys are headed.
The lyrics to The Angry Mob examine the fickleness of popularity: "We are the angry mob / we read the papers every day / we like who we like, we hate who we hate but we're also easily swayed."
T-Bone Burnett
Proof Through the Night and The Complete Trap Door; Rhino Handmade.
Grade: A
Finally, Burnett's great early-'80s work appears on CD. Proof features appearances by Pete Townshend, Richard Thompson and more; the Trap Door sessions are lighter pop, featuring songs from two long-out-of-print EPs. Available only through RhinoHandmade.com
