Armed burglary suspect nabbed in Broomfield
Published March 27, 2007 at midnight
A 23-year-old Colorado Springs man was arrested by Broomfield police this morning after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a man who tried to stop him from breaking into a vehicle.
James D. Garcia was being held for investigation of several charges at the Broomfield County Jail.
Sgt. Colleen OConnell reported that at 5:23 a.m. a resident in the 3200 block of Discovery Court saw a man trying to break into a vehicle, and when he confronted him the man pulled a gun, then fled the area in a red vehicle.
A Broomfield officer spotted the vehicle near West 152nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard and attempted to stop it. A short chase ensued and after losing sight of the vehicle for a time, he found it abandoned in a back yard in the area of Dogleg Lane and Sandtrap Circle in the Broadlands subdivision.
It was later determined that the vehicle had been stolen out of El Paso County.
Some property located inside of the vehicle had been stolen from a
burglary in Broomfield that had occurred earlier in the morning, police
said.
With the assistance of the Westminster Police Department and Colorado
State Patrol, a perimeter was established and a Broomfield K-9 began a
track.
Reverse 911 was activated and 1,020 homes were called telling
residents to remain inside of their homes while a search was
conducted.
At approximately 7:25 a.m. a resident called to report that the person
being sought was on a porch at a home in the 13700 block of Legend
Trail and officers took him into custody without incident.
Police recovered a handgun in the area after the man was
arrested.
