Shanahan: Wilson might remain in Denver

Published March 26, 2007 at midnight

PHOENIX - Linebacker Al Wilson is still a Broncos player and coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday the veteran linebacker could stay that way.

Saying there was "nothing new" on the Wilson trade front, Shanahan briefly added just after his arrival at the NFL meetings that Wilson staying with the Broncos is still one of several scenarios.

The Broncos were discussing a trade with the New York Giants this past week, but after giving Wilson a physical, the Giants had concerns about what they internally called a "cervical issue."

They didn't pass Wilson on a physical. The five-time Pro Bowl selection led the Broncos in tackles this past season, with 113.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Detroit Lions are believed to be at least two other teams to have expressed interest in Wilson.

Teams have differing guidelines regarding what is acceptable in a player's physical, so just because the Giants did not pass Wilson doesn't mean another team would not.

The 29-year old Wilson has had some history of neck troubles in his career. In 2003, he said he had "an unbearable" ache, and he previously has had some stingers - a blow to a network of nerves that branch from the neck, running down the shoulders and into the hands and fingers.

He has said he hasn't had much trouble since, but he was carted off the field this past season after colliding with defensive tackle Gerard Warren against the Seattle Seahawks. He played in following weeks.

Wilson has four years remaining on a deal he signed in February 2004 and, with hefty salary- cap figures in each of those four seasons, it is expected the Broncos would ask Wilson to renegotiate that deal if he is to stay with the team.

Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer, is trying to secure trading partners with the Broncos.

MAKE THE CALL: Though a proposal for a coach-to-player communication device for the defense failed last year, an informal poll of several head coaches Sunday showed plenty of support for it.

One already is in use between a coach and quarterbacks.

Last year, 11 teams voted against the proposal, but it is one of several changes the league's competition committee will put before the owners this week. Shanahan said last year and Sunday that he favors using a device on defense.

Under the proposal, before the game, a team would have to designate which defensive player would wear the device, and if that player leaves the game because of injury or substitution, another player would not be allowed to wear it.

That is slightly different than on offense. Every quarterback on the roster has a headset in his helmet in case he has to play.

ETC.: The Broncos this week will find out if they receive any supplemental draft picks for their losses in free agency last March. . . . The league this week is expected to announce the national television schedule for the preseason, as well as the national telecasts for the regular season's opening weekend. The full regular-season schedule will be released in early April.
