GAME DAY
Outfielder Ryan Spilborghs continued to make a push in his battle with John Mabry for the final spot on the Rockies roster by delivering a run-scoring single in his only at-bat in the Rockies' 3-2 exhibition loss to Arizona on Sunday at Hi Corbett Field.
Spilborghs is hitting .458 but is a right- handed hitter. Mabry, who is a left-handed hitter, is hitting well, too, carrying a .407 average. . . . Byung-Hyun Kim worked a 1-2-3 inning in a B Game against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday morning, his first appearance since being told Friday he will be a relief pitcher. He complained that he wasn't given a fair opportunity to earn the fifth starter spot. . . . Right-hander Manny Corpas, below, ran his spring training scoreless streak to seven innings by working the ninth inning of the game against Arizona.
MOVING FORWARD
Right-hander Brian Lawrence, coming back from shoulder surgery last March that sidelined him all of 2006, worked six innings and gave up three runs in the loss to Arizona.
Lawrence said he continued to feel strong, but he admitted it appears he will start the season on the disabled list and most likely go on a minor league rehabilitation assignment to make sure he has built up his arm strength.
"They have announced their five starters," he said, referring to the announcement Friday that Josh Fogg will join Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis, Rodrigo Lopez and Jason Hirsh in the rotation.
HONORED
Before the game Sunday, the Rockies' final spring game at Tucson Electric Park, rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was presented the Abby Greer Award as the spring MVP. The award is named for the 6-year-old girl who was hit by a car and killed while crossing the street outside Coors Field on Aug. 26, 2002. Tulowitzki is hitting .310 and beat out Clint Barmes for the shortstop job.
