Rain didn't dampen spirits at Runners Roost track meet

Published March 25, 2007 at midnight

FORT COLLINS — In a way, Arapahoe’s Tylan Pierpont swam and dove his way to the high jump title in Saturday’s Runners Roost track meet at French Field. On the other hand, Chantel Bernabo of Wheat Ridge was worried about her hair, strange as it may seem.

Weather played havoc with the athletes representing 23 schools and the rain finally took its toll as the meet was cancelled with seven events remaining.

However, it didn’t dampen the efforts of Pierpont. The 6-foot 2 junior won the high jump with a 6-0 effort, way off the mark for many of the 19 competitors that stuck it out through a driving rainstorm. And if anyone was surprised by his win, it was Pierpont himself.

The opening height was 5-6, but only seven jumpers, which included one that passed to 6-0, managed to reach 5-8.

"I made 6-4 in a preseason practice and this is actually my first meet of the year," said Pierpont, who also finished sixth in the triple jump. "It is not the ideal conditions by any means, but it was fun and I liked it. The run up to the bar was water and the pit was like a swimming pool once you hit it. It was cold and I really didn’t like the water splashing around.

"I was nervous about the one jumper coming in at 6-0 and was a little nervous," Pierpont said. "But he missed all three attempts. I was here last year and made 5-10 in good weather and to win it this year was enjoyable. But, I just wanted to get it over with."

Bernabo won the 100 with a time of 12.74 seconds, one that she not all that pleased with. But given the weather, she will take the win.

"I was pretty mad that I had to run in this weather," Bernabo said. "My hair is just drenched and that made it heavier today. I thought the meet would be cancelled, but I’m glad that I went out and won regardless. My prelim time was not that good and I felt I could have done better. In the finals, I just pulled it out. I just don’t like bad times."

Fairview’s Sara Coco did not have any trouble with the water-filled track. The Fairview senior, who is headed for the University of Southern California, won the 3,200 with time of 11-minutes, 09.01 seconds then came back to set a meet record in the 1,600 with a time of 5:08.79.

For that matter, Cherry Creek newcomer Charles White also awed the rain-soaked crowd. White, who moved to Colorado two months ago, won the 3,200 with a time of 9:34.44. However, he was pushed much of the way by Evan Appel of Dakota Ridge, who ran 9:38.82.

Cheyenne (Wyo.) Central won both the boys and girls team titles in the rain-shortened meet. The boys scored 87 points to outdistance Arapahoe (55 ½) and Fairview (53 ½). The girls tallied 83 points to cruise past Fairview (41) and Rocky Mountain (40 ½).
