Senate to consider anti-troop-surge resolution next week
Published March 24, 2007 at midnight
A resolution opposing President Bush's troop surge might reach the state Senate floor next week.
Sen. Ken Gordon, D-Denver, said there's a small chance it will be debated Monday but that Thursday is more likely.
Even that is not a sure thing because lawmakers are considering the state budget.
The measure, formally known as Senate Joint Memorial 02, is sponsored by Gordon and Sen. Ron Tupa, D-Boulder.
The resolution passed the Senate's State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee last week. It is likely to be approved by the full Senate, in which case it will go to the House for a vote.
It says, in part, that it is "not in the national interest of the United States to deepen its military involvement in Iraq, particularly by escalating the United States' military force presence in Iraq."
On the other side of the political aisle, Sen. Mike Kopp, R-Littleton, is waiting for his resolution to be heard sometime after the Senate vote. -Kopp's Senate Joint Resolution 22 is a call for supporting the troops.
