Ralston Valley jells as team in 9-0 blitzkrieg of Conifer
Published March 24, 2007 at midnight
LAKEWOOD - It was just like old times for the Ralston Valley girls soccer team Friday evening at Lakewood Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs have dominated 4A Jefferson County play for the past half-dozen years, wining the past six league titles with nary a conference loss to show for it. But after reaching the state title game last season, Ralston Valley lost three all-state players to graduation and it was expected it might be vulnerable in the race for the Jeffco title this season.
After dismantling 10th- ranked Conifer 9-0 on a rain- soaked field, the top-ranked Mustangs (6-0-0 overall, 3-0-0 Jefferson County League) look as strong as ever.
Ralston Valley coach Stephanie Carpenter said that the game Friday was the first time this season she felt that the team totally clicked. With a strong core of upperclassmen mixed with a talented group of younger players, she said the Mustangs are just starting to jell.
"We didn't really know how to play together," Carpenter said. "We're starting to work together and starting to click more, and it took (Friday night's) game to make them feel happy about playing together as a team."
Ralston Valley was on the same page from the opening kick, overwhelming Conifer (3- 2-0, 2-1-0) with a four-goal outburst in the first 16 minutes. Alli Winter converted an Amy Bertle corner kick into a score in the fifth minute, and then Hayley Coniglio added another goal less than a minute later.
Coniglio, the only freshman on the Mustangs roster, assisted on the next goal, setting up sophomore Taylor White's score in the 11th minute.
Megan Hellrung ended the deluge a short time later, sending a shot from about 35 yards out that bounced past the Conifer keeper and into the back of the net.
Ralston Valley would add a couple of more scores before the half, getting a goal from Mallory Peterson before Coniglio notched her second, after taking a great pass from Sara Nicholson deep in Lobos territory.
"It was fun (Friday night)," Coniglio said. "It feels good to come out and play as a team and get some goals. We've had a little trouble lately, so it feels good to come out and just play well."
Evi Ranson, Sammie Steele and Kirstyn Johnson added scores in the second half for the Mustangs, who held Conifer to two shots on goal, both coming in the first half.
